HARTFORD – UConn men’s basketball was down 10 in the very early going against Georgetown at the XL Center, but as has become a tradition for this team, it overcame an early deficit to come back and win with relative ease, 93-79.
Georgetown jumped out to a hot start, hitting its first five shots, including four threes, to take a 14-4 lead into the first media time-out.
The Huskies quickly closed in, responding with a couple of Solo Ball threes before a Hassan Diarra steal-and-score cut the lead down to two one minute later. The Huskies gave the lead right back after some turnovers and quick misses.
The Huskies got to within three after a McNeeley three. They closed to within one thanks to some great plays from Diarra and Tarris Reed Jr., including a steal and half-court run for a dunk from the Michigan transfer.
Another McNeeley three pushed them ahead for their first lead of the game. Then Reed Jr. completed a three-point play off an offensive rebound and followed it up with another lay-in after a steal to push the home team’s lead to four with 5:16 left in the first half.
Georgetown attempted some pressure late in the period, but the Huskies went into the break up seven as Reed kept going. He had 11 points and six rebounds at halftime on his way to posting a double-double (20 points, 10 rebounds) on the night.
The Hoyas quickly closed in to start the second half, and the game remained close through the first two media time-outs. McNeeley and Reed continued making plays to keep the ball going through the hoop, and the Husky lead grew to 10, its largest to that point, with 12 minutes left.
The Huskies held on as Diarra’s inventive lay-ups were falling and he entered double-digit scoring as well. They broke it wide open by the end, with Alex Karaban and Jaylin Stewart getting involved to keep pushing the lead. Karaban became the fifth Husky in double figures.
Next up, the Huskies are on the road to take on Providence. The game will be televised on CBS and tip-off on Saturday at 12 p.m. ET from Amica Mutual Pavilion. The Friars are 12-16 on the season, coming off losses to Georgetown and Marquette heading into this matchup, and ranked 88th in KenPom (75th Offense, 125th Defense), which projects a 75-72 Husky win.
