Junior G Aidan Mahaney Enters the Transfer Portal
UConn junior guard Aidan Mahaney has announced his decision to enter the NCAA transfer portal, seeking a new team for next season. The 6’ 3” guard from Lafayette, California, transferred to UConn from Saint Mary’s ahead of the 2024-25 season, but will now look for another landing spot after just one year in Storrs.
In his lone season with the Huskies, Mahaney appeared in all but 1 game, starting the first 5. He averaged 4.5 points and 1.3 assists in 12.4 minutes on the season. His playing time waxed and waned depending on matchups, Diarra’s health, and how he performed when he came into the game. He had a game saving performance in the Baylor home game, a turning point of the season following the Maui melancholy. He nailed three 3-pointers in a stretch that pumped up the crowd and led to Coach Hurley embracing him with a loving headbutt.
Before joining UConn, Mahaney was a standout at Saint Mary’s, where he earned All-WCC honors and was known for his scoring ability and clutch shot-making. Unfortunately, he rarely played to the standard he set for himself with the Gaels.
With Mahaney’s departure, Diarra’s eligibility depleted, and Ahmad Nowell’s transfer, UConn has no players who played point guard for the Huskies this season remaining on the roster. There are no pure point guards in the freshman class, either. Expect the Huskies to be active in the transfer portal looking for an experienced lead guard.
