After landing their first spring portal commitment in Maryland OL Tamarus Walker, the Huskies turned their attention to the defensive side of the ball, adding veteran LB Sione Moa. Moa began his college career at Utah State, and after redshirting his first season in 2021, he played in ten games for the Aggies, totaling 12 tackles (zero against the Huskies in the 2022 season opener). At BYU, Moa notched four tackles in 2023, and ten in 2024, including a career-high three against Southern Illinois.

Coming out of HS, Moa was 6’1” 175 lbs according to 247Sports, and chose Utah State over an offer from FCS Idaho State. Since then, Moa has put on some weight, standing at 6’1” 230. He was teammates with his brother, Aisea, at BYU, before Aisea transferred to Michigan State this offseason. Moa had his best season per PFF in 2024, earning an above-average rating of 71.2, with his best performance coming against Wyoming, where he tied his career-high with three tackles, and had his most snaps played as a Cougar at 27.

At UConn, Moa joins a linebacker room that includes fellow transfers Tyquan King and Bryun Parham, along with returners Aaron Key, Donovan Branch, and Amir Renwick. The group recently lost Kansas State transfer Terry Kirksey Jr., but with Moa now in the mix, a fierce competition for starting spots is set to unfold this summer.

Moa comes from North Ogden, UT, where as a member of the LDS Church he went on a full-time mission to Kingston, Jamaica. The Moa family has quite the legacy at BYU, with his father playing TE for the Cougars, as well as his uncle.
