Although UConn has been playing football since the late 1890s, they are still a relatively young team in terms of playing at the highest level. Beginning their transition from then 1-AA (now FCS) in 2000, the Huskies were an independent team from 2000-2003. The initial plan was for UConn to be Independent until 2004, then replace Temple in the Big East in 2005, but conference realignment struck in 2003, and suddenly the Big East that had Virginia Tech, BC, and Miami, was no longer.
