CHESTNUT HILL, MA — UConn football won its fourth game in a row on Saturday, defeating Boston College in Alumni Stadium, 38-23.
The Huskies (5-2) were in control most of the way as both offenses were thriving in the first half, and then the UConn defense clamped down in the second as the visitors pulled away for the win.
This is UConn’s second victory ever over Boston College (1-6) and its first ever on the road. The first win also came under Jim Mora, 13-3, at Rentschler Field in 2022.
Boston College got on the board first with a field goal on the opening drive, moving the ball well on the ground and completing a fourth down through the air to get into kicking range.
UConn responded with a 50-yard touchdown pass to Juice Vereen to make it 7-3. BC answered with another field goal before the end of the first quarter, making it 7-6 after rushing all over the Huskies again to get into the red zone before the drive stalled.
UConn mounted another touchdown drive to go up 14-6 early in the second quarter. Fagnano scrambled for a first down and completed a 26-yarder to John Neider before running in a touchdown on a play-action rollout.
BC’s run success continued, hitting the ground on eight out of nine plays before a touchdown pass from Grayson James to Kaelan Chudzinski made it 14-13. UConn responded with a field goal before James hit Reed Harris for a 39-yard touchdown to give the Eagles a 20-17 lead at halftime.
Both teams punted just once each in the first half as they gained over 200 yards through the first 30 minutes. BC averaged 5.1 yards per rush at the half as UConn averaged 8.2 yards per play in the first half before finishing at 7.8 yards per play.
After allowing 272 yards in the first half, the UConn defense held BC to just 27 yards in the third quarter and 96 yards in the fourth quarter.
UConn started the second half with a touchdown to regain the lead, 24-20, after Fagnano found Neider deep for 43 yards. BC punted on its first drive as the two teams exchanged punts after UConn’s touchdown. The Huskies extended their lead to two scores when Fagnano hit Vereen for another TD to make it 31-20 going into the fourth quarter.
Boston College managed a field goal in response to that touchdown and forced a punt to get the ball back down eight with 8:58 left. The Huskies forced a punt before a 38-yard Skyler Bell catch-and-run put the game away, 38-23, with 5:04 left. That would hold for our final score.
Fagnano finished with 362 passing yards, four passing touchdowns and the rushing score, impressive numbers considering the run game wasn’t working for UConn on the day. Skyler Bell led all pass-catchers with 10 for 125 yards, while Vereen added 82 yards on four receptions with his two touchdowns. Eight different Huskies caught a pass.
Next up, the Huskies hit the road to play Rice. The game will kick off at 3 p.m. ET on Saturday, October 25th, on ESPN+ from Houston.
