Monday night’s WNBA Draft in Brooklyn saw two UConn Huskies hear their names called, starting with Aaliyah Edwards in the first round. The forward was drafted sixth overall by the Washington Mystics, becoming the 28th first-round pick in UConn women’s basketball history.

Edwards will join fellow Husky forward Stef Dolson on the Mystics in Washington DC.

“Just to have a dream and actually walk through it, it’s just amazing,” Edwards said. “For me to be fortunate enough to… keep going and pushing my dreams is amazing.”

After a late surge up draft boards, Nika Mühl was picked just outside of the first round, at 14th overall by the Seattle Storm. She became the 47th Husky drafted into the league.

“Their roster, just looking at it, those are some iconic women,” Mühl said. “Those are some iconic basketball players, people that I wanna learn from, that I wanna listen to, that I wanna get challenged by, that I wanna get yelled that, everything.”

It was an emotional night for both former Huskies, who were in attendance with teammates Paige Bueckers, Azzi Fudd, Caroline Ducharme, and Aubrey Griffin as well as head coach Geno Auriemma, associate head coach Chris Dailey, and others.

In total, 18 former Huskies are currently on WNBA rosters.
