After UConn and Michigan faced off for the first time in program history this past season, the two programs have decided to make it an extended occasion. Wednesday morning it was announced that the two teams would be on the schedule for a two-game series.
The first game will be played in Ann Arbor on November 5th, 2026. The following matchup will be played in Connecticut during the 2027-2028 season with an exact date and location yet to be announced.
When the two teams played early in this past season on November 21st at the Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase, it ended up being the tightest win the Huskies would have all season as the 72-69 victory for the Huskies would be their only win decided by single digits.
It was a game of two halves as Syla Swords would help Michigan cut down what was an 18 point halftime deficit down to as low as one in the final minutes of the game. UConn was anchored by its two stars. The now No. 1 pick in this year's WNBA Draft Azzi Fudd, who scored 31 points, and Sarah Strong who packed the box score with 16 points and 20 rebounds.
Michigan, who saw their season end in the Elite 8 against Texas, will return their star production in full. The Wolverines operated relatively ahead of schedule with large parts of their lineup rotations being sophomores. Led by the likes of Olivia Olson and Swords, every indication says that Michigan will be a top-10 team once again next season and looking to build on the results from this past postseason.
The addition of Michigan to the non-conference schedule now puts another date on the calendar that houses a great test and potential resume builder for the Huskies. Michigan now joins South Carolina (Nov. 25), Duke (Nov. 28), and Maryland (Dec. 5) in the announced dates for UConn so far.
Loading up in the non-conference is certainly not a new strategy for UConn and it will be one they deploy again in the 2026-2027 season as they work to hang another banner and win a national championship.
