New HC Jason Candle and his staff made a big recruiting splash Friday, landing three star QB Cooper Newman. The Seiverville, TN is the 63rd rated QB nationally per 247Sports, Newman was offered by UConn on New Year’s Day, an early offer from the staff. He got an in-house visit in May by OC Nunzio Campanile, highlighting how important a piece he would be for this recruiting class.
Newman held offers from Michigan State, North Carolina, Troy, Georgia State, Georgia Southern, Middle Tennessee, Charlotte, Marshall, App State, Bowling Green, and Toledo (while Candle was HC), and was scheduled to visit Georgia Tech this weekend, and Maryland on the 19th. Those visits will no longer be necessary.
Newman recently spoke to Storrs Central about his official visit last weekend, saying "I thought the visit was great! Getting down to meet most of the staff for the first time and seeing everything in person, it was awesome! I could definitely see myself playing for UConn!"
Newman had a monster junior season, throwing for 2,482 yards, 33 TDs against just four INTs with a 75% completion percentage, leading his squad to a 9-1 record and a state championship. As a sophomore, he threw for 3,488 yards, 45 TDs with a 72% completion percentage. In throwing just one INT, he would be a perfect candidate to take over for Joe Fagnano.
