Nick Evers commits to UConn
For the first time in a long time, it seemed that UConn’s QB battle was largely settled heading into the summer. Not so fast, my friend. The Huskies made a huge addition to the roster, in former Oklahoma/Wisconsin transfer Nick Evers. Evers, the 8th rated QB in the Class of 2021 out of Flower Mound, TX, chose the Sooners over offers from Florida (where he initially committed), Auburn, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Louisville, Minnesota, Ole Miss, Penn State, TCU, Texas Tech, Vanderbilt, and Virginia Tech, among many other G5 offers. He is rated a three star and 61st overall QB in the transfer portal.
Evers has just one collegiate attempt, an incompletion during Oklahoma’s shocking 49-0 loss to Texas in 2022. Evers came to Norman behind QB Dillon Gabriel, then Oklahoma brought in highly touted freshman Jackson Arnold, and Evers transferred to Wisconsin. He did not see any game action at Wisconsin, as the Badgers had also brought in 2022 Davey O’Brien Award semifinalist Tanner Mordecai, of SMU, who won the job in 2023. When Mordecai graduated, the Badgers brought in Miami (and Glastonbury, CT’s own) Tyler Van Dyke.
Evers is looking for a chance to get some snaps, and he may very well get that at UConn. In HS, Evers threw for over 5,000 yards, 44 TDs, and rushed for 18 TDs. in his junior and senior seasons. He had 648 rushing yards in his senior season alone, along with throwing for 2,591 yards, and a 68% completion percentage. He was an Elite 11 participant, along with fellow QBs Quinn Ewers (Texas), Drew Allar (Penn State), Devin Brown (Ohio State), Cade Klubnik (Clemson), Maalik Murphy (Texas/Duke), and Ty Simpson (Alabama).
A spring preview article from The Athletic’s Jessie Temple stated that Evers was likely behind Van Dyke and Braedyn Locke on the depth chart. Locke was the 25th rated QB in the Class of 2022, and originally committed to Mississppi State until transferring to Wisconsin. Temple believed Evers had the best combination of arm strength and athleticis. Locke believed that Evers made up a lot of ground from a knowledge standpoint in 2024, and Van Dyke said Evers’ ceiling his “through the roof.”
Additionally, Evers’ brother, Drew, an OL, is one of the top prospects in the Class of 2026.
Evers joins a QB room with last year’s QB1 out of camp, Joe Fagnano, as well as freshmen Tucker McDonald and Cole Welliver. QB1 starting in week 3, Ta’Quan Roberson, has entered the portal.
