Huskies Take Over WNBA All-Star Weekend, Pelicans are Shopping Hawkins

Azzi Fudd Wins WNBA Three-Point Contest

As usual, UConn made a major impact during the WNBA All-Star weekend. It started on Friday night when Azzi Fudd became the first-ever rookie and former Husky to win the three-point contest.

Then on Saturday, Team Coop’s starting lineup was filled with former Huskies as Paige Bueckers, Breanna Stewart and Gabby Williams all were a part of the first five.

Williams led all former Huskies with 18 points, five rebounds and six assists in her first career WNBA All-Star Game start. Bueckers finished with 12 points and seven assists, while Stewart added six points, 13 rebounds and seven assists.

Tyrese Martin

The former two-year Husky announced on X that he has signed a contract with FC Barcelona of the Liga ACB and EuroLeague (Europe's two premier basketball competitions). The deal is for one year.

The 51st overall pick of the 2022 NBA Draft played 122 games, including 17 starts, across three seasons with the Atlanta Hawks, Brooklyn Nets and Philadelphia 76ers. Martin averaged 6.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game while shooting 40.1% from the field, 33.7% from three and 76.1% from the free throw line. 

Ahead of the 2024–25 season, Martin signed a training camp deal with the Nets before earning a two-way contract. On November 27th, 2024, Martin erupted for a career-high 30 points on 10-of-18 shooting, including 8-of-10 from three in a 127-117 Nets victory at the Phoenix Suns.

Performances like that helped Martin earn a standard, multiyear NBA contract with the Nets in February of 2025. Martin would go on to make 60 appearances that season and average 8.7 points per game behind 35.1 percent from three.

Martin’s final nine NBA games this past season were played with his hometown team, the Philadelphia 76ers. The Allentown, Pennsylvania native averaged 2.2 points in nine minutes per game.

Martin played 59 G League games for the College Park Skyhawks (Atlanta Hawks’ G League affiliate), Iowa Wolves (Minnesota Timberwolves G League affiliate) and the Delaware Blue Coats (Philadelphia 76ers’ G League affiliate) and averaged 18.6 points per game.

Jordan Hawkins

Last week, Jake Fischer and Marc Stein reported the New Orleans Pelicans are shopping the former UConn sharpshooter. Hawkins has not seen a ton of opportunities over the course of his first three seasons with New Orleans, especially this past season after playing in 51 games in 13.6 minutes per game, both career-lows.

Hawk’s best chance to contribute was in the final five games of the Pelicans regular season after he averaged 15.8 points on 47.6 FG% and 50.0 3-FG% (12-24). Among those games were a 20-point performance against the Boston Celtics and a season-high 25-point outing versus the Utah Jazz. 

One team that is said to be in the mix for Hawkins is the Memphis Grizzlies. This would be a fun landing spot for UConn fans as the Grizzlies already have former Husky star Cam Spencer.

Hawkins (109) and Spencer (99) combined for 208 three-pointers during UConn's back-to-back national championship seasons in 2022–23 and 2023–24.

Hawkins is set to earn just over $7 million during the upcoming 2026–27 season, which could be another motivator for the Pelicans to move on from him.

George Springer

The New Britain, Connecticut native helped the Toronto Blue Jays defeat the Boston Red Sox on Saturday afternoon behind this three-run home run:

After enjoying a renaissance season last year, hitting .309 with 32 home runs and 84 RBIs, the 2026 season has not been as productive for Springer so far. The 13-year veteran is hitting .233 with 11 home runs and 30 runs batted in across 75 games. However, the Blue Jays designated hitter has been heating up recently, batting .370 with five two-hit games in his last seven contests. 

Anthony Kay

On Wednesday, the former Husky southpaw picked up his seventh win of the season after allowing five hits, two earned runs, with four strikeouts in five innings of work in a Chicago White Sox 4-2 win against the Texas Rangers. Kay is now 7-4 with a 4.21 ERA on the season and has made 19 starts this season, after totaling seven in his first five MLB seasons. 

Kay’s next start will be on Tuesday against the New York Yankees.
