UConn men’s basketball hired Charlies Stevens to be the team’s next General Manager, the team announced today. Stevens is coming from the San Antonio Spurs, where he was the team’s Director of Grassroots Scouting. Sources confirmed the hire to Storrs Central last Saturday.
The position became available with current GM Tom Moore set to retire at the end of this month. UConn announced Tom Moore’s retirement in July. At a recent summer practice media availability, Coach Hurley outlined what he was looking for in the person to fill the position:
Charlie has northeast roots. His hometown is the Bronx, NY, and he attended prep school at York Prep in NYC. He went on to play college basketball at Clark University in Worcester, MA, where he was a two year team captain. During his time at Clark, he worked at Pro Hoops, Inc., a basketball training company. He also interned at Excel Sports Mangement, a sports business agency with many basketball clients. In a video on the Pro Hoops youtube page, Stevens talks about his time assisting in training Kemba Walker, who was both an Excel and Pro Hoops client, and someone Stevens had grown up watching in the Bronx.
Through a connection at Clark, Stevens began working remotely as a video coordinator and assistant coach for Ironi Ness Ziona, a baskebtall team in Israel’s top division. At the end of the season, he began working for the San Antonio Spurs in their front office, after impressing with his European player scouting. For the Spurs, he continued primarily doing scouting, but assisted in other front office operations tasks as well. He worked for the Spurs for five years, with his final role focusing on scouting high school and AAU basketball players. During his time at the Spurs, they drafted players from UConn in the first round in two of the last three seasons: Stephon Castle in the 2024 NBA Draft and Tarris Reed Jr. in 2026.
With his unique mix of high school and European scouting background, as well as player development and coaching track record, agency connections, and NBA front office experience, Stevens brings a multifaceted skillset to the Huskies that should serve him well in the role.
