On Friday afternoon, Jon Rothstein reported that UConn and Dan Hurley have agreed to a two-year contract extension that would keep him the Husky head coach through the 2031-2032 season.

Rothstein also said it will keep Hurley “among the highest paid coaches in the country.”

UConn confirmed this report at 3 p.m. on Friday.

Hurley came to Storrs in 2018 when the program had reached its lowest point in the modern era as a member of the American Athletic Conference. Since then, it moved to the Big East, won two national championships with another championship game appearance, and saw 11 NBA Draft picks.

“Dan has proven to be the very best coach in men’s college basketball, and we’re thrilled to keep him home at UConn for the next six years,” athletic director David Benedict said in a statement. “In this chaotic era of college sports, it has never been more important to maintain continuity as we strive to compete at the highest level.”

In the NIL era, with the landscape shifting massively and at a rapid rate, the Huskies have evolved into perennial national contenders under Hurley. He entertained some interest from the NBA in the 2024 offseason, signing a 6-year, $50-million contract to stay. That was a big win for UConn, especially after Kentucky had also reportedly made a play to try to hire him.

Since then, it has seemed unlikely that any college program would be able to lure Hurley away from UConn. The NBA might still be of interest for him, but financially and in terms of control over the basketball, it will be hard to leave, at least until 2032.

“It’s an incredible honor to coach the game I love at a place like the University of Connecticut,” Hurley said in a statement. “We understand our responsibility to the people of Connecticut and to the incredible supporters of UConn Basketball and will continue to bring a relentless, obsessive approach to winning and championship-level success.”

News of the extension arrives after the Huskies wrapped up their three-game exhibition slate, with their season opener coming on Monday. The 2026-2027 campaign tips off against Gardner-Webb at 9 p.m. on NBC Sports and Peacock from PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford.
