After starring in multiple sports at UConn, the man they called "The Moose" was drafted by multiple professional leagues. He chose to sign with the Boston Red Sox, where he won Rookie of the Year in 1950.

Walt Dropo has often been called the first big name in UConn athletics. Nicknamed “The Moose from Moosup,” the 6’5, 230-pound phenom starred on the Huskies’ football, basketball, and baseball teams of the 1940s before playing for the Boston Red Sox.

The village of Moosup, located in the town of Plainfield, Connecticut, became near shorthand for the Dropo family, collectively the first family of UConn athletics.
