NY WR Commits to UConn Football

UConn football kept the busy Father’s Day weekend good news spree going with the commitment of WR Xavier Watson.

Hailing from Waverly, NY, Watson had a breakout season this year for the 13-1 Waverly HS team, that won their first ever state championship. Watson caught 62 passes for 917 yards and 17 TDs, averaging 14.8 yards per catch. Watson has offers from Air Force, Army, Bethune-Cookman, Colgate, Columbia, Cornell, Maine, Navy, New Hampshire, and Temple. Now, not to put pressure on the young man, but at 6’4” 205, he fits the profile of another productive, but lightly recruited HS receiver out of NY that went on to be pretty darn good. That’s Justin Joly, for anyone who was not aware.

Waverly, a small town of about 4,400 people on the NY/PA border in between Elmira and Binghamton, was a surprise state championship in Class C, winning the title over #1 seeded Fonda-Fultonville at the JMA Wireless Dome, formerly the Carrier Dome. Waverly racked up 553 yards of offense, and Watson contributed with a 49 yard TD catch to open the scoring. Overall, Watson caught 8 passes for 161 yards and 3 TDs on the day, adding four tackles on defense, and a blocked FG. He would earn 1st Team All-State.

Watson fits the mold of a good old-fashioned diamond in the rough that UConn seemed to find so often back in the Big East days. Watson is also a track athlete, where Waverly won the state championship in the 4x100 relay, of which Watson was a part. Watson also played on the Waverly HS basketball team, which, you guessed it, also won the state title. He is someone that is going to be tough to bring down, and could also transition to TE.
