Official Visit Weekend Preview #3

After a busy Father’s Day weekend that saw 12 recruits visit, this weekend will be a little more subdued in Storrs, with just four visitors. There were as many as eight scheduled, but some of those recruits either replaced the visit with another school, or committed to another school outright. This is the last big recruiting weekend until the offseason, so see who is checking out the campus below.

DB Osiris Gilbert

A GA native playing for powerhouse Buford, Gilbert dropped his top 7 schools back in mid-May and the Huskies were on the list along with Florida State, Georgia, Indiana, Duke, USF, and Liberty. He’s an interesting propsect in that obviously he has offers from two of the biggest programs in the country, but the question is how real the interest is from those schools. Rivals seems to think there is interest, giving him a rating of 5.6, but 247Sports has no rating for him, indicating that there isn’t much interest from those two schools. Regardless, UConn beating out Indiana, Duke, USF, and Liberty would be pretty good, given where they’ve been recently. MaxPreps shows Gilbert played in eight games this season, totaling 21 total tackles, two INTs and two pass breakups. Buford has put many guys into the upper echelon of FBS, including 3 of the top 5 prospects in Georgia last season. Those players went to Nebraska, Georgia, and Ohio State, so Gilbert has the luxury of practicing daily against some of the best. He visited Liberty last weekend.

LB George Hill

The Western PA LB is looking to join a long history of successful Huskies from the area, including safety Ty-Meer Brown, who coincidentally, is the Athletic Director at Hill’s school, Woodland Hills in Pittsburgh. Hill has offers from Akron, UMass, Temple, Bowling Green, Arkansas State, Delaware, Buffalo, Eastern Michigan, and several FCS teams. He has visited Buffalo and Eastern Michigan already, so it remains to be seen if being the last visit works in the Huskies’ favor.

DB Keshawn Davila (JUCO)

Davila has been a hot commodity this offseason coming out of Northwest Mississippi CC, where he was a JUCO All-American. Davila totaled 35 tackles including 6 for loss, as well as one sack, two INTs, and two pass breakups. He has received offers from UAB, Old Dominion, UMass, Temple, Middle Tennessee, Georgia State, Charlotte, UTSA, UCF, Arkansas State, Toledo, Western Michigan, Jacksonville State, New Mexico State, SMU, Georgia Southern, Liberty, Western Kentucky, Texas State, Memphis, and several FCS offers. He has already visited UTSA and Toledo, and based on social media activity, is heavily interested in UCF. Nevertheless, UConn earned a visit. I am assuming he will use his sophomore season at Northwest before heading up to Storrs next season.

RB Mekhi Nelson

Nebraska is heavily recruiting Nelson, a Wilkes-Barre, PA native attending St Thomas More in Montville. He was in Lincoln last weekend, and former UConn RB coach, now at Nebraska, EJ Barthel, would love to grab him. My intel tells me that HC Matt Rhule is more interested in a local RB, so we will see who wins out. Barthel was the first to offer Nelson two years ago while he was with the Huskies, and he was re-offered, in addition to Bowling Green, UMass, and Maine. With the interest from the Huskers, Nelson is now a high three star recruit with a 247 Crystall Ball to Nebraska. Reminiscient of Victor Rosa’s recruitment a couple years ago, when it was thought BC was the frontrunner, only for him to of course choose the Huskies.
