Huskies Dominate FAU 48-14
Starting a six game homestand, UConn wanted to start it off big, and they sure did, racking up over 400 yards on the ground in defeating Florida Atlantic 48-14. The 424 yards UConn amassed was an FBS record.
The Huskies got off to a good start, forcing a three-and-out on FAU’s first drive. Nick Evers drove downfield, on the strength of a couple of passes to TJ Sheffield and a roughing the passer penalty that added 15 yards to an Ezeriah Anderson catch. The drive stalled out, and the Huskies settled for a Chris Freeman 34-yard FG, his first make of the year. UConn’s defense forced another three-and-out. The ensuing drive got into FAU territory, but Nick Evers fumbled on a rush, giving the ball back to the Owls. FAU was able to get their first first down of the game, but their drive stalled out as well behind a Tui Faumuina-Brown QB pressure.
Evers then hit Skyler Bell for a 43 yard catch, a tremendous grab where Bell had to adjust underneath to make the catch in double coverage, and the drive culminated with a five yard pass to Mel Brown, the first TD of the day. After another stop in UConn territory, UConn responded with a twelve play, 91-yard drive, spanning nearly six minutes, and Durell Robinson capped the drive with an eight yard TD, and the Huskies headed into the half with a 17-0 lead, holding the Owls to under 100 yards (80 rushing, 10 passing).
UConn got the ball to start the second half and proceeded to punish FAU on the ground, with a 14-play, 75 yard drive, running the ball eleven times. Nick Evers took it in from three yards out, and the Huskies found themselves up 24-0 with 8:09 remaining. Cam Fancher, on the ensuing drive, threw a pick to LB Jayden McDonald, who took it down to the FAU 23. The Huskies could not capitalize with a touchdown though, settling for another Freeman FG and extending the lead to 27-0. The Owls would get on the board after an eight-play, 72 yard drive. Fancher rushed for 15 yards but started to finally get a little bit of rhythm going in the passing game, throwing for 42 yards on the drive.
UConn would get the next two touchdowns, a Nick Evers keeper and another from Durell Robinson. FAU would also get another touchdown, but the game was well out of hand at that point. Joe Fagnano hit Shamar Porter for another incredible TD pass, similar to the Merrimack game, giving UConn a 48-14 lead and the fans emptied out. Unlike many games recently, the fans got to leave with a smile on their face.
