A specter was haunting college gymnasiums—the specter of stall ball. 

In the days before the shot clock, overmatched college teams tried to even the odds by holding the ball for minutes at a time. This wasn’t just a matter of holding for the last shot at the end of the half or end of the game. At times, the entire game became an exercise in continuous stalling.
