Rapid Recap: Huskies prevail over Stetson
BROOKLYN – The UConn Huskies took care of business in a big way in their NCAA Tournament opener, beating Stetson 91-52 in a game that started 8-0 before the Hatters' first basket and was at 23-4 at the midpoint of the first half.
The Huskies advance to the Round of 32 to face 9-seed Northwestern, which beat 8-seed FAU in overtime in the day's early matchup.
Alex Karaban took charge early and the Huskies dominated down low, with Donovan Clingan flushing two early alley-oops on his way to a team-high 19 points. All five Husky starters hit double-digit scoring as UConn (32-3) controlled the boards and finished the first half shooting 69 percent from the field and 50 percent from three. The Huskies took a 52-19 lead into the break.
The Hatters got off to a hot start in the second half, mounting a 9-0 run to cut the lead down a little, but it wasn’t nearly enough. UConn closed it out with little issue to avoid being part of any first-round drama.
The program is undefeated in the first round in six tries as a No. 1 seed, a streak that goes back to 1990.
