UConn HC Jim Mora, fresh off one of the best stretches in team history, is taking the vacant job at Colorado State, first reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel at 12:33 AM on Wednesday morning. Mora’s record at UConn was 27-23, a remarkable feat given that the program had won just ten games from 2016-2021. He guided the Huskies to three bowl appearances in four seasons, their first seasons as an FBS Independent.
In a statement, AD David Benedict said “We are grateful for Coach Mora’s contributions to UConn over the past four seasons. He took on the challenge of rebuilding our football program and delivered results that exceeded expectations. Under his leadership, the Huskies won 27 games and achieved bow eligibility in three of his four seasons, including back-to-back nine-win seasons for the first time in program history.”
Offensive Coordinator Gordon Sammis will be the interim HC, and coach the team in their upcoming, unannounced bowl appearance.
Mora had signed a contract extension just prior to the 2024 Fenway Bowl, extending him through 2028. He was in line to earn $1.96M in 2026, with several opportunities for performance-based incentives. He is set to earn an additional $150K this season for winning nine games. Per his contract, UConn is owed $1.5M if he leaves during the 2025 calendar year, a cost almost certain to be absorbed by Colorado State.
