Spencer Comes Alive from Three, Tyrese Martin Posts First Career Triple-Double
Tyrese Martin (G League)
After appearing in one game with the Philadelphia 76ers, Martin was assigned to their G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats and boy did he impress his new teammates over the weekend.
In his debut on Saturday, Martin secured a double-double, scoring 22 points and grabbing 14 rebounds along with eight assists in the Blue Coats 143-123 win over the Grand Rapids Gold (Denver Nuggets G League affiliate). Then on Sunday, Martin had an encore for the ages, recording his first career triple-double. The former second round pick scored 26 points, brought down 10 rebounds and dished out 10 assists to help lead the Blue Coats take down the Gold 124-112 to sweep the weekend series. Martin shot 10-of-21 from the field and connected on five more three pointers.
These have been two strong performances from Martin, but he is only eligible for 13 more regular-season games with the Philadelphia 76ers. If the 76ers want him to be available beyond those 13 games and/or for any postseason action they’ll need to convert his current two-way contract into a standard NBA deal.
Cam Spencer
It was a productive weekend for the Memphis Grizzlies after winning back-to-back games on the road and Spencer played a huge role in both victories. Especially on Friday night when Spencer poured in 25 points in just 25 minutes in the Grizzlies 124-105 win against the Dallas Mavericks. The sharpshooter went 9-of-16 from the field, including 4-of-9 from behind the arc and 3-of-3 from the line.
On Sunday, Spencer hit two more triples in a 10-point, 4 assists and 2 steals performance in the Grizzlies 125-106 win against the Indiana Pacers. In 10 February games, the 2024 Big East Tournament Champion dished out 51 assists (5.1 per game) and only turned it over 10 times (1.0 per game).
Donovan Clingan
Clingan took on an old Big East rival, Ryan Kalkbrenner, on Saturday and did something that he had never done before against the former Creighton star, hit a three-pointer over him.
However, Kalkbrenner and the Charlotte Hornets got the best of Clingan and the Portland Trail Blazers, pulling away for a 109–93 victory.
On Sunday, Clingan kicked off the month of March on a high note by recording his 24th double-double in the Portland Trail Blazers 135-101 loss against the Atlanta Hawks. DC drained a pair of three-pointers and dominated the glass, posting 15 points and 15 boards. He also added five assists for the second time in three games.
Stephon Castle
Castle turned in a pair of solid outings over the Spurs last two games, scoring 18 points on Thursday against the Brooklyn Nets and 13 points on Sunday against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. The Spurs rode an 11-game winning streak into that matchup against New York, but the Knicks came out on top 114-89 to snap the streak.
Fun fact: Donovan Clingan has knocked down 60 three pointers in 56 games so far this season, while Castle has connected on 51 three point attempts in 49 games. Yes, Clingan has played 7 more games, but this is just another way to show how effective DC has been from three. He only made 14 three-pointers during his rookie campaign last year, and of course made just two long range shots in his final season at UConn.
Tage Thompson
In a matchup of the top two teams in the Eastern Conference, Thompson picked up his 32nd goal of the season in the Buffalo Sabres 6-2 Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday.
The Sabres are a perfect 3–0 since the NHL resumed after the Olympic break and are poised to snap one of the longest active playoff droughts in professional sports. The Sabres have not made the playoffs in the last 14 seasons, but as the current two seed in the Eastern Conference with a 35–19–6 record and 76 points, just four behind the Lightning, this team, led by Tage Thompson, looks like a legitimate Stanley Cup contender.
Liam McNeeley (G League)
It was great to see Liam McNeeley back on the court this weekend after missing just over three weeks with a right ankle injury. McNeeley, who made his return with the Greensboro Swarm, had been up with the Charlotte Hornets over the previous few weeks to focus on his recovery and rehab.
Coming off the bench in each of his first two games, McNeeley poured in 15 points, knocking down three triples while going 4-for-11 overall and 2-for-4 from the stripe on Saturday in the Swarm’s 126-114 win over the Raptors 905 (Toronto Raptors G League affiliate). On Sunday, Liam McNeeley scored a season-low nine points in a G League season-low 21 minutes. With the Greensboro Swarm playing on back-to-back days, it’s likely the team didn’t want to overextend him after he had missed significant time.
Tristen Newton/Samson Johnson (G League)
Newton posted his fifth straight 20 plus point effort on Friday night after scoring 22 points in the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (Houston Rockets G League affiliate) 135-133 win over Samson Johnson and the Noblesville Boom (Indiana Pacers G League affiliate). Newton shot 7-of-13 from the field, including 1-of-6 from three and 5-of-5 from the free throw line. The former Husky also dished out six assists and is now averaging 25.4 points per game, which ranks fourth best in the G League.
And speaking of Samson Johnson, you might recall that last week I reported he and the Boom agreed to a contract buyout, allowing him to explore overseas opportunities. Well, Johnson didn’t explore too long because he returned to the floor in a Boom uniform on Friday against his former Husky teammate, Newton. Johnson scored three points in 27 minutes off the bench.
On Sunday, Johnson took James Bouknight and the Mexico City Capitanes (No G Leage affiliate) and scored eight points, pulled down seven rebounds and handed out two assists in 20 minutes.
James Bouknight (G League)
Bouknight put together back-to-back 20 plus point outings over the weekend, scoring 23 points on Friday against the Iowa Wolves (Minnesota Timberwolves G League affiliate) and 21 points on Sunday against Johnson and the Boom. The 2026 G League 3-point Contest champion connected on seven three-pointers between the two contests to help lead the Capitanes to back-to-back victories.
Andre Drummond
After not playing in the Philadelphia 76ers 124-117 Thursday night win over the Miami Heat due to a coach’s decision, Drummond returned to the starting lineup on Sunday in the 76ers 114-98 loss at the Boston Celtics. The 2012 Big East All-Freshman member recorded his 14th double-double of the season, and his 498th of his career. He scored 10 points, hauled in 12 rebounds with four assists and four steals. Drummond reached double-digit points, thanks to sinking a pair of triples, marking the fourth time this season the former Husky has made two three-pointers in a game. He now has knocked in 20 three-pointers on the season and is shooting 36.4% from beyond the arc.
The 76ers (33-27) currently have a two and a half game lead over the Orlando Magic for the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference.
Tyler Polley (G League)
After missing two games due to a right ankle injury, Polley returned to the floor on Saturday in the College Park Skyhawks (Atlanta Hawks G League affiliate) 137-117 loss to the Capital City Go-Go (Washington Wizards G League affiliate). The 2021 Big East Sixth Man of the Year scored five points on 2-of-3 shooting including 1-of-2 from behind the arc with four rebounds and one block in 24 minutes off the bench.
Jordan Hawkins
Year three for Jordan Hawkins continues to be a struggle. Hawkins hasn’t logged double-digit minutes in well over a month. He last reached the mark on January 18th, 18 games ago. In that game, Hawkins scored six points in 13 minutes.
Hawkins will still be under contract with the New Orleans Pelicans next season, where he is expected to make just north of $7 million.
Andre Jackson Jr.
Jackson Jr. played in the last two Milwaukee Bucks games, however, both stints came late in the game when the games were all but decided. The Bucks (26-33) are three games behind the Charlotte Hornets for the 10th and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
Jackson Jr. has a club option next season, worth just over $2 million. If the Bucks do not pick up his option by June 29th, then Jackson Jr. will be an unrestricted free agent.
