Aidan Mahaney commits to UConn
The UConn Huskies have added their second experienced transfer this offseason in Aidan Mahaney, a guard who played for Saint Mary’s the last two years after joining as a Class of 2022 commit. He visited UConn on Thursday and Friday of this past week after visits to Creighton, Virginia, and Kentucky.
The 6-foot-3 California native shot 40 percent from three in his freshman season, which ended with a loss in Albany to the eventual champions, his new team. Mahaney scored nine points in that Round of 32 game.
With Cam Spencer, Tristen Newton, and Steph Castle all moving on from the squad this year, UConn’s backcourt experience is depleted. Mahaney brings some experience to the room in addition to his shooting ability.
His three-point percentage dipped to 36 percent as a sophomore, but he maintained his 13.9 points per game average and took more threes than twos, unlike the previous year. He also increased his assist numbers slightly and was a leader on a team that won its conference regular-season and tournament crowns as Mahaney earned first-team All-WCC honors.
If Hassan Diarra and Alex Karaban return, UConn has one scholarship open following the commitments of Tarris Reed Jr., Liam McNeeley, and Mahaney this offseason.
