Castle Does All He Can in Game 5 WCF Loss, Stewart Nets 25 in Liberty Third Straight Loss
Stephon Castle
Stephon Castle scored a team-high 24 points, but it wasn’t enough as the San Antonio Spurs dropped Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals to the Oklahoma City Thunder, 127-114. Castle shot 7-for-11 from the field, including 3-for-5 from beyond the arc with five rebounds, six assists and three steals. The three triples were his most since he knocked down five in his 32-point, 11-rebound, Game 6-clinching performance against the Minnesota Timberwolves in the Western Conference Semifinals earlier this month.
It took San Antonio just over two minutes to score its first basket, when Castle hit a three-pointer. He then assisted on six of the Spurs’ next 10 points, helping his team take an early 13-8 lead.
All eight of Castle’s free-throw attempts came in the second quarter, and he made seven of them. The former Husky guard entered halftime with 12 points and three assists but the Spurs trailed 69-58.
Castle made several impact plays in the third quarter, starting with a layup to cut the Thunder lead to 78-62. A minute later, he found Victor Wembanyama for an alley-oop plus the foul. With eight minutes remaining, Steph knocked down his second three-pointer of the night, then assisted on a Devin Vassell three 30 seconds later to cut the deficit to 87-79 and force Oklahoma City to call a timeout.
The Thunder were able to withstand the run as Castle picked up his fifth personal foul with 9:44 left in the fourth quarter with Oklahoma City leading 105-93. Castle sat for the next three-and-a-half minutes and re-entered with the Spurs trailing by 13.
With the Thunder now leading the series 3-2, it’s the first time the Spurs are facing elimination this postseason. Game 6 will be back in San Antonio on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock.
Breanna Stewart vs Serah Williams
Breanna Stewart scored a game-high 25 points but it was not enough as the New York Liberty once again fell at home to the Portland Fire 81-74. It marks the first time in the Stewie-Liberty era that the team has lost three straight home games. The loss drops the Liberty to 3-4 on the season.
The former Husky star was asked if she expected the slow start post game. “No, definitely not. But it’s a learning experience for everyone… While it seems we’re in the lows right now, eventually we’ll get to a place where everybody’s really confident and comfortable with what’s going on. I’m happy it’s happening early (in the season) and not late.”
Serah Williams scored four points in 11 minutes off the bench for Portland. The Fire are 2-1 against the Liberty this season.
Aaliyah Edwards/Olivia Nelson-Ododa vs Golden State “Huskies”
Former Husky Gabby Williams looked determined to make an early statement Monday night against the Connecticut Sun. After scoring a season-low six points in Friday’s loss to the Indiana Fever, Williams scored 10 of the first 17 points for the Golden State Valkyries to help set the tone in a 97-70 victory. She finished with a game-high 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including three made 3-pointers.
Williams is now 15-34 from three (44.1%) so far this season. The 15 threes lead the team and is tied for seventh most in the WNBA.
Kaitlyn Chen scored 10 points off the bench in a season-high 23 minutes. The 2025 National Champion has now scored in double-digits in back-to-back games for the first time in her career (scored a career-high 18 points last Friday against the Indiana Fever).
Tiffany Hayes scored 9 points off the bench, while Kiah Stokes went 1-of-2 from the free throw line in the 27-point home win for the Valkyries.
Aaliyah Edwards scored eight points with five rebounds and one block for the Sun. Olivia Nelson-Ododa returned to the floor after missing the last four games due to an ankle injury. She scored seven points and dished out a career-high five assists in just 12 minutes.
