On Saturday, June 8th, Team USA named their roster for the 2024 Olympics, which includes former UConn stars Breanna Stewart, Diana Taurasi, and Napheesa Collier.

Breanna Stewart, a two-time WNBA MVP and three-time National Player of the Year with the Huskies will be competing in her third Olympics after being named MVP in the most recent edition. This season, Stewart is averaging 19.9 points, 9.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.9 steals with the New York Liberty following a campaign in which she earned her second WNBA MVP award.

Meanwhile, the legendary Diana Taurasi will be competing in her sixth Olympics, breaking the international record. Taurasi, the WNBA’s all-time leading scorer in her 19th season in the league with the Phoenix Mercury, is averaging 16.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per contest.

Napheesa Collier, having started her sixth season in the W strongly, leads the Lynx in points, rebounds, assists, and steals per game, cementing her as a leading candidate for this year’s MVP. The former Rookie of The Year is averaging 21.6 points, 11.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 2.3 steals.

In addition to the former Huskies, the team will include WNBA stars A’ja Wilson, Brittney Griner, Alyssa Thomas, Jewell Loyd, Kelsey Plum, Jackie Young, Sabrina Ionescu, Chelsea Gray, and Kahleah Copper. While the team news created turmoil amongst fans over social media due to the omission of widely-known Caitlyn Clark, the U.S. has one of the strongest rosters in the tournament with nine of the 12 players having Olympic experience and three-time Olympians. This balance of youth, experience, and winners makes the Stars and Stripes the team to beat as they begin their quest to secure their eighth consecutive gold medal.
