Breanna Stewart & Napheesa Collier announce 3x3 basketball league
Exciting news for women's basketball fans was just announced, as Unrivaled is set to debut in January 2025.
There are many different components as to why this is huge news, especially if the league can maintain its success for years to come. Headed by former UConn stars Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier, Unrivaled aims to pay women a minimum six-figure salary, the highest average salary in U.S. women's professional sports. With the current WNBA minimum sitting at around $64,154, that is a noticeable jump, and with the other benefits included with the league, it’s hard to ignore that type of opportunity.
On top of that news, the league is saying that they're striving to elevate players' brands to new
heights, a feat that became increasingly difficult with the fact that many are overseas during the WNBA offseason. With Unrivaled as a new possibility, women's basketball can be showcased in the United States during a traditional offseason period for the W.
With the way that Unrivaled is scheduled, it also gives an easier transition period for women’s players to finish their 3x3 season, recover, and then jump back to the WNBA season without hurrying back from an overseas career.
Thanks to such potentially great features like that, it’s no surprise that many star-studded investors have stepped up to endorse the league. From current UConn women’s coach Geno Auriemma to NBA legend Carmelo Anthony, there’s been no shortage of interest in helping Unrivaled become a real success.
As the season is set to start in January with 30 players set to suit up in a 3x3 style environment, it’s set to become one of the most unique attractions for women’s basketball viewers ever.
